Drive north along the Great Ocean Road to Lorne

Apollo Bay is right in the middle of The Great Ocean Road, so it's a great starting point from which to explore the road itself, all the wonderful beaches which border it and the rainforest hinterland of the Great Otway National Park.

Many people believe the section of The Great Ocean Road between Apollo Bay and Lorne is the most attractive. Advertising agencies and magazine editors obviously agree because scenes from this section have been used extensively in both print and TV advertising.

The road skirts alongside fine beaches and sheer escarpments, and with streams plunging down waterfalls through ancient gorges to the sea, the hidden beauty of this area can be missed if you are not careful. Take your time to admire the beautiful scenery.

Stop by the side of the road in the designated car park and walk the modest 1km track to Sheoak Falls only 40 minutes from Apollo Bay, or take the 8km trek to Kalimna Falls in the same area. If you have the time and the stamina these places make a great place for a picnic where the vast rainforest in the hinterland meets the sea.

A little further along the road behind Lorne are the Erskine Falls. An easy walk brings you to an overlook of the falls cascading 30 metres into a beautiful fern gully.
